How field trips enrich the learning experience?

Have you ever watched a student’s eyes light up the moment they see something they’ve only read about in a textbook? As a teacher at Sherwood High, I’ve had the joy of witnessing that spark many times and that’s the magic of a field trip. In a world where learning happens either through books or through screens, stepping outside the classroom offers our students something priceless, the chance to experience learning in real life. This hands-on approach helps students connect abstract ideas to tangible experiences.

Field trips are much more than just a break from the routine, they’re powerful learning experiences that engage the mind, body, and senses. Research on experiential learning (Kolb’s cycle) shows that students understand and retain information far better when they actively experience concepts instead of passively absorbing them. He used a four-step cycle: experience, reflection, planning and making new experience to validate it.  When learners touch, observe, and question the world around them, they make connections that deepen comprehension and curiosity. Studies by the American Institute for Research also suggest that students who participate in field-based education score higher in critical thinking and show lasting interest in academic subjects. In essence, learning by doing transforms knowledge into understanding and that’s exactly what we aim for as educators.

At Sherwood High, we believe that education should go hand-in-hand with experience. Over the years, we’ve organized many field trips that have left lasting impressions on our students and have ignited their curiosity.  One such memorable trip was to the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, where our students experienced the wonders of space and astronomy firsthand. Seeing planets, constellations, and galaxies unfold before their eyes. Another enriching experience was our visit to the Indian Music Experience Trust, where students discovered the beauty and diversity of Indian music. The children were amazed to see the different musical instruments and understood the concept of wind instruments, string instruments and percussion. Another trip to Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum was perfect for our budding scientists who explored the hands-on exhibits and interactive displays helping them bridge the gap between theory and practice. These trips not only expanded their knowledge but also encouraged them to ask deeper questions, appreciate art and science, and learn collaboratively with their peers.

Every field trip we plan at Sherwood High reaffirms one simple truth, education is everywhere, waiting to be discovered. These experiences shape our students into more curious, confident, and compassionate learners. As teachers, our greatest reward is seeing them connect classroom concepts to the real world with enthusiasm and wonder. Field trips also offer a break from the classroom, introducing fresh perspectives and vivid lessons capturing the student’s attention.

In today’s world of bookish learning, it can be easy to overlook the simple power of getting students out of their seats and into the real world. Yet, few educational experiences are as memorable or impactful as a field trip. It helps foster teamwork and communication and exposes students to different cultures, environments and perspectives. They connect theory to reality, inspire curiosity, and build social and emotional skills that are just as important as academic ones.
