“Every Child is an Artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up”. – Pablo Picasso
And that the artist in a child never fades away is what we aim for here at Sherwood High. The encouragement and training given is to bring out hidden talents and ensure that children are always connected to their creative and imaginative sides.
The level of artwork taught in classes is on the basis of grades. Grades 5 and above are given canvases and are taught to use acrylic paints. Grades 4 and below work with pencil shading, oil pastels, and watercolors. Besides these, smaller workshops in origami, best-out-of-waste, and SUPW-based activities are conducted. Exhibitions are held for the work of grades 5 to 8. Each of these exhibitions is based on a theme. Students come up with ideas related to this, have the drawing on sheet approved by the teacher, are taught to enhance their drawing before transferring it onto the canvas. Exhibitions are held close to the end of the academic year in January.
Besides this, the craft instructor takes the children through a range of creative group activities. Board work, soap carving, wood blocking, and pot painting are just some of the special sessions that our students enjoy.
We would like to encourage the competitive spirit among our students and this is regularly done with inter-house competitions and events as well as competitive opportunities going up to inter-school and national level competitions.
There are several opportunities that have been created under this discipline. Students can be part of the senior or junior choir at the school. Sherwood High also has a well-outfitted musical set up with drums, bass guitar, both electric and acoustic as well as keyboards. Children who already play instruments are brought together to form bands – for school programs as well as inter-school competitions. Vocals are also taught to all students at the school – while this is primarily western, there are times when songs in other languages are taught based on programs conducted.
